Part V: Key Topics in Ed Tech
Adding headsets to my classroom would make a huge impact on my instruction and practice but also on how students think about Spanish. Noise-canceling headphones with microphones allow all students to practice speaking activities at once. Therefore, I would be able to give ample listening/speaking practice and assessments without using too much class time. These assessments would be more holistic and based off on student production, which is the most important skill to have. A more holistic approach to Spanish would change how students think of the language instead of focusing on isolated vocabulary lists and grammar topics. First, students would gain new understanding about Spanish speakers, gaining new perspective and empathy by being able to “converse” with native speakers from around the world. Second, students would have a better social perspective on learning by focusing on authentic language and interactions, which could lead to a higher intrinsic motivation. Third, by allowing students to respond freely to the recordings, students would be able to think critically and respond creatively. With these changes, students would relate more to Spanish-speakers and realize the importance of learning to speak Spanish. The headsets allow students to spend more time developing understanding of Spanish cultures and language.
Although adding headsets seems like a small change, it would redefine speaking activities and alter the classroom focus immensely.
